Google Public DNS

Google DNSIn an attempt that Google claims is to help speed up the web, they have introduced today Google Public DNS. An “enhanced” DNS service aimed at providing a faster web experience through faster DNS resolution and better security. This feels a little wrong since Google has complete transparency to the websites you visit. I’m sure this is bound to ruffle the feathers of privacy advocates.

According to their FAQ, it looks like they don’t personally identify you aside from the 24 hour period they keep “temporary logs”. One thing that you have to be aware of though is that they do keep a “small” sample of activity which I presume is used for analysis ($$$).

All in all, Google has a decent security record and if you’re comfortable with their privacy policy/FAQ, then I don’t see why you shouldn’t give their service a shot. I’ve gone ahead and configured my router to use their new service so we’ll see how that goes. I’ll report back any issues I encounter along the way.
